This fascinating and quite unique, fast growing, small tree-like perennial produces sprays of very fragrant, white, pendulous flowers, much-loved by milkweed butterflies in its native homes of Jamaica & South America. By far the most amusing/interesting aspect of this plant though, is the 2-2.5" inflated, translucent lime green & dare I say "hairy" seed pods! They always provide much amusement dangling as they do all over the branching top half of the plant. As a cut flower, these branches can cost £20 a stem at high-end florists. Best in a large pot or outdoors in the UK in the summer.
Sowing advice: For best results, sow seeds in good light at any time onto a good soil-based compost. Cover the seeds with fine grit or compost to approximately their own depth. We recommend germinating at 15 to 20 degrees C. Seeds should ideally germinate in between 2 and 6 weeks although they make take considerably longer. Pot on seedlings before finally planting out into a container or a well-drained spot. Also makes an excellent plant in a large pot!
