Common name: Orange Jewelweed, Common Jewelweed, Spotted Jewelweed, Spotted Touch-me-not, Orange Balsam,
Plant Classification: Hardy annual
Minimum Height: 80 cm
Maximum Height: 1.0 meter
This very fast-growing plant, native to North America bears a constant succession of orange flowers on stems which are somewhat translucent, succulent, and have swollen, darkened nodes. The ripe pendent seed pods have projectile seeds that explode out of the pods when they are lightly touched, and the leaves appear to be silver or 'jewelled' when held underwater. We recommend that these plants should not be allowed to spread into the countryside
Sowing advice: For best results, sow seeds as soon as you receive them in a cool place (not a fridge) onto a good soil-based compost. Cover the seeds with fine grit or compost to approximately their own depth. Unlike the more common annual impatiens, these fresh seeds can be very, very slow indeed to germinate, usually taking several months. Please be very patient, and do not discard the seed pan, no matter how long it takes for germination to occur.
