This tropical and sub-tropical tree, native of the rainforests of Colombia, Ecuador and Panama, opens its pretty, pure white, jasmine-like flowers, which later become very large, pomegranate-sized green fruits which are famous for being exceptionally rich in calcium. The strongly-flavoured pulp of these fruits is very dense, and uses vary from making juice, to ice creams and jellies, and in the preparation of jam, wine, desserts, and even traditional medicines with supposed aphrodisiac effects! It is also used by the local communities against hypertension, bronchial diseases and malnutrition. The grey-brown trunk of the tree is small and is sometimes separated into two or three smaller trunks. This tree can resist small periods of frost and even floods, although it needs an average annual temperature of at least 25°C.
Sowing advice: These seeds have already been thoroughly cleaned and should be sown into a well-drained, sandy compost at any time of the year, and covered thinly with sand or grit and kept moist. Keep at between 20-25 degrees C. Seeds sometimes germinate within 4 to 6 weeks although some varieties may take very much longer so please be patient. Plant out in the open ground in the tropics or in a large container elsewhere. Minimum 15C.
