LUPINUS BLUE JAVELIN
Vigorous plants produce single spikes of fragrant sky-blue flowers that change to gold as they age and which can reach 4 feet tall. They look stunning in clusters of 3 or 5 plants spaced out 18 inches apart, producing long blooming plants with showy flowers that are fragrant, much-loved by butterflies and good for cutting. Called 'Pearl Lupin' because the seeds look like round, white pearls. (Botanically Lupinus cruckshanksii A. Gray or Lupinus mutabilis var. cruckshanksii).
Sow March to April. Germinate at 20-30C in a propagator. Cover seeds thinly. Germination usually takes 7-14 days. Do not exclude light at any stage. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into 3in pots. Grow on in cooler, well lit conditions for 10-15 days before planting out 12in apart after all risk of frost.
