Description

Avery early species, this has faintly-marbled green leaves and pristine, white, pale pink, or even purple-tinged petals on the exceptionally upright flowers which have contrasting cadmium-yellow anthers, the whole heavily textured flower having a strong rose scent. One of the earliest species to start into growth, this sessile, or stemless species, opens its flowers extremely early in the season. In the wild it is native to the north western United States from Washington to central California where it occurs in forests, woodlands and scrub.

Sowing Advice

For best results, sow seeds as soon as you receive them onto a good soil-based compost. Cover the seeds with fine grit or compost to approximately their own depth. These seeds can be very slow indeed to germinate, and may wait for spring before emerging whenever sown. Do not use artificial heat to try to germinate them as it will simply disrupt their germination mechanism. Please be very patient, and do not discard the seed pan.
