This well-known tree makes smooth, yellow, pear-shaped fruit which are 2 inches long, with an outer husk that splits open when the fruit is ripe revealing the shiny seed. This is purple-brown with a red or crimson covering or aril, the red outer part of the seed being used to produce mace and the inner kernel ground to make nutmeg. This well-known spice predictably comes from the Moluccas Islands, once called the Spice Islands. They only do best outside in a tropical or subtropical climate, but can make an attractive pot specimen in cooler climes!
These seeds have already been thoroughly cleaned and should be sown into a well-drained, sandy compost at any time of the year, and covered thinly with sand or grit and kept moist. Keep at between 20-25 degrees C. Seeds sometimes germinate within 4 to 6 weeks although some may take very much longer so please be patient. Plant out in the open ground in warmer countries or in a large container elsewhere.
