Ray Linda and Graham

Our Origins

The story of Plant World Seeds begins with Ray Brown, a former industrial chemist and metallurgist whose dissatisfaction with his career led him to pursue his true passion: plants. In 1974, Ray and his wife relocated to the Western Highlands of Scotland, where they founded a successful alpine nursery.

A move to South Devon in 1985 marked the beginning of a new chapter. On a challenging, exposed, four-acre hillside, Ray created the renowned Plant World Gardens, an extraordinary landscaped map of the world, with plants native to each continent meticulously planted in their respective regions. This garden became not only a visual masterpiece but also an essential source for the seeds that would form the foundation of Plant World Seeds.

A Legacy of Discovery and Innovation

Ray's lifelong fascination with rare and unique plants has fuelled the development of Plant World Seeds. Over the years, he has led seed-collecting expeditions to Nepal, Chile, Mexico, and Russia's Sakhalin Island, introducing countless plant species to UK gardeners. These adventures, combined with his relentless curiosity, have enriched our catalogue and contributed to the preservation of global horticultural heritage.

Ray's innovative spirit extends to plant breeding, where he has created numerous new varieties now enjoyed worldwide. These include striking Aquilegias, hardy dwarf Erysimums, fragrant Petunias, and even creeping Lupins. His contributions to horticulture have earned him recognition from media outlets such as the BBC's Gardeners' World, cementing his status as a true plantsman.
