Acer cissifolium is an unusual Japanese maple whose leaves are divided into three toothed leaflets, recalling ivy or vine foliage rather than the familiar palmate maple form. Young leaves often carry bronze tones before turning dark green, then finish the year in a glowing blend of yellow, orange and red. Pendant racemes of tiny yellow flowers are conspicuous in spring. With its broad, layered branches and rounded outline, this refined small tree makes a distinctive specimen for a sheltered garden, especially where autumn colour is a priority.
