Aciphylla Crosby-Smithii

A rare endemic of southern Fiordland, Aciphylla crosby-smithii forms dense cushion-like masses of closely packed rosettes rather than the bold open fans associated with larger speargrasses. Stiff linear leaves have pale yellow margins, sharp tips and often a reddish midrib, creating striking detail at close range. Rounded heads of cream-white flowers are carried on short, fleshy stems above the cushion. Naturally found on exposed rocky slopes and snow-tussock herbfields, it is a slow, demanding alpine for experienced growers who can provide cool roots and excellent drainage.
