Amethyst allium is a tall Mediterranean ornamental onion whose slender stems carry dense, oval to rounded heads of rich amethyst-purple flowers in early summer. The drumstick-like umbels rise cleanly above narrow green foliage, bringing strong vertical rhythm to sunny borders without the bulk of the largest globe alliums. Each head is packed with nectar-rich florets that attract bees and butterflies, then dries into a sculptural seed head useful in arrangements. It thrives in open, sharply drained ground and is particularly effective woven through grasses, silver foliage or pale perennials.
