Allium amplectens, the narrowleaf onion, is a refined western North American species with threadlike leaves and rounded umbels of white to soft pink star-shaped flowers. The heads sit on slim upright stems and are often enlivened by yellow or purple anthers, giving them delicate detail at close range. In the wild it occurs in open meadows, dry slopes and distinctive clay or serpentine soils from British Columbia to California. Compact, graceful and attractive to bees, it suits gravel gardens, sunny troughs and the front of a border where its airy late-spring display will not be lost.
