Bulgarian honey garlic is an architectural allium with tall stems carrying loose umbels of nodding, bell-shaped flowers in cream and green, heavily striped and flushed with dusky purple. The bells hang like miniature lanterns in early summer, then turn upright as angular seed capsules develop, providing a second dramatic phase. Formerly separated as Nectaroscordum, it has a more relaxed, woodland-edge character than the formal globe alliums. Bees relish the nectar-rich flowers, and established clumps are long lived, thriving in sun or light shade in almost any fertile soil that drains freely.
