Allium Subhirsutum

Allium subhirsutum is a graceful Mediterranean onion whose glossy green leaves are edged with fine white hairs, the feature reflected in its name. In spring, slender stems carry loose heads of bright white, star-shaped flowers with golden anthers and a light honey fragrance. The airy umbels are attractive to bees and sit neatly above the low foliage without overwhelming nearby alpines. Naturally found in dry, rocky places around the Mediterranean, it is ideal for a sunny trough, gravel garden or raised bed where the small bulbs can enjoy sharp drainage and a dry summer rest.
