Alyssoides Cretica

Now known botanically as Lutzia cretica, this rare Cretan subshrub forms a rounded, much-branched cushion of grey-white leaves densely covered in soft star-shaped hairs. Large clear yellow flowers open from late winter into spring, followed by inflated, almost spherical pods that remain decorative into early summer. The species is confined to limestone cliffs and rocky ravines on Crete and a handful of neighbouring Aegean islands, making it a plant of genuine geographical interest. Its silvery foliage and bright early bloom are superb in a sunny crevice or alpine house with lean soil and perfect drainage.
