Anthemis tinctoria carries a long season of clear yellow, daisy-like flowers held on wiry stems above finely divided, aromatic foliage, giving the plant a light, open presence despite its robust constitution. In flower, it has a luminous quality, the blooms catching light and movement in open ground.
Native to Europe and western Asia, this species has a long history of cultivation, both as an ornamental plant and as a traditional source of yellow dye. Plants form upright clumps and flower freely through summer, responding well to cutting back by producing successive flushes of bloom. Seed-raised plants show natural variation in height and vigour, contributing to an informal, meadow-like effect.
Growth is strongest in full sun, with plants remaining compact and floriferous on well-drained soil, including poorer or stony ground. The foliage remains fresh and finely textured, providing contrast to broader-leaved perennials throughout the season.
