These superb and delicious fruits are also known as Asian pears or Apple pears, and very rarely encountered in the West,. Uniquely large and juicy, they are fruits that people in Asia, particularly in Japan & Korea, have been enjoying for centuries. They have an incredible resemblance to a russet apple.... but they truly are pears. With a new and most distinctive sweet taste, they are very slowly entering the European market place, as international travel now provides access to this exotic foreign food. In previous times it was very rarely offered, or indeed even known of, but you can now very simply grow them from the perfectly viable fresh seeds we produce from our own trees. Their taste and texture are quite unique too with a crisp, crunchy bite, much like that of an apple. Connoisseurs insist that their flavour profile contains notes of melon, pineapple, honey and, of course, pea.... and we eat lots and can confirm this! Thy were originally slowly introduced to other regions of Asia and Europe along the silk road, and the first documented appearance of an Asian pear in the United States was recorded in queen Victoria's era!
