Argemone Munita

Argemone munita is a striking western North American prickly poppy with jagged, silver-blue leaves and stems armed by formidable yellow spines. Large crumpled white flowers open like tissue paper around a dense centre of golden stamens, creating a dramatic contrast with the metallic foliage. The name munita means armed or fortified, an apt reference to its protective spines. A natural pioneer after disturbance and fire, it thrives in hot, dry, stony ground where softer plants struggle. Grown as an annual in Britain, it brings a bold desert character to gravel gardens and sunny containers, but its latex and spines demand care.
