Babiana stricta 'Alba' is a white-flowered form of the South African baboon flower, producing neat fans of strongly pleated, slightly hairy leaves and upright racemes of clear white funnel-shaped blooms. The flowers may carry delicate cream or pale markings in the throat and can be lightly fragrant, giving a fresh contrast to the familiar blue and purple forms. The name Babiana recalls baboons observed digging for the underground corms at the Cape. A graceful subject for an alpine house or cool greenhouse, it grows through winter and spring before retreating into a dry summer dormancy.
