Exceptionally large, dramatic, knobbly spikes of seeds, even larger than those on the popular Carex grayi. This rare, bone hardy plant from damp North American woods has probably the most ornamental head of any small grass.
Native to eastern and central North America, this species grows in wetlands, ditches and along stream edges, forming dense clumps of arching green foliage. The large, pendulous seed heads mature from green to brown and persist well into autumn, providing seasonal interest and wildlife value.
Best grown in moist to wet soil in sun or partial shade, Carex lupulina tolerates periodic flooding and is particularly useful in areas that remain damp for much of the year. It performs poorly in dry conditions but is robust and long lived where moisture is consistent.
