Centaurea macrocephala is a bold and commanding perennial, producing very large, thistle-like flower heads in clear yellow, held high on strong, upright stems. The scale of the blooms, combined with their architectural form, gives the plant a striking presence in summer borders and open planting.
Native to the Caucasus, this species grows as a robust clump-forming perennial with coarse, mid-green foliage at the base and tall flowering stems rising well above. The flowers open in early to mid-summer and are rich in nectar, drawing in bees and other insects. Once established, plants are long lived and maintain their stature year after year.
Growth is upright and solid, with flowering strongest in full sun and on well-drained soil. The bold foliage and oversized flower heads provide strong contrast alongside finer-textured perennials and grasses.
