Chicory Palla Rossa

Very early variety with beautiful white marbling on the red leaf. Sow May - Jul and harvest until the end of September .Radicchio is a type of chicory, and in fact is classified as a chicory in Italy. We tend to separate radicchio, recognising its red colouring and unique flavour as being different from the rest of the chicories. it is fairly easy to grow in that it consistently forms nice heads, yet can also be forced. It has probably the greatest colour contrast of the red radicchios, with the most intense colour being found in late autumn during cool weather. It is known for its compactness, size and flavour. Palla meaning "Ball" and Rossa meaning "Red" in Italian. The uniform well wrapped round heads can be used for either a baby leaf or left to grow to maturity. A member of the chicory family, Radicchio is an excellent ingredient to add to a salad mix. Its soft, majestic red leaves and striking white veins are a lively contrast with other garden greens. After extensively testing many Chioggia types, we proudly offer Palla Rossa Special. Gorgeous dark red leaves and uniform 5-7 inch heads make Palla Rossa Special the best medium-early radicchio we've evaluated. Has that distinctive tangy taste without getting bitter or bolting. Unique, as it can be planted for both summer and fall harvest. A marvelous salad companion, it is an excellent complement in mixed steamed greens, stir-fries, and savoury pastries. Radicchio grows well in containers, pots, or raised beds. It can be interspersed between plants in your garden, the red leaves are very showy and it grows well under leaves of other plants in partial shade. Radicchio “Palla Rossa” has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
