Clematis hexapetala is an unusual non-climbing clematis that forms a compact, upright, almost shrubby clump rather than a vine. Narrow green leaves line the stems, which become covered in spring and early summer with masses of fragrant, creamy white flowers, usually displaying six slender tepals around a central tuft of stamens. The blooms are followed by the familiar silvery, feathered seed heads of the genus. Native across parts of East and Central Asia, it is exceptionally hardy and brings the floral grace of a clematis to borders and gravel gardens without needing a trellis or climbing support.
