This truly sensational multi-value plant has fragrant, starry white flowers in late summer, followed by outstanding, metallic-blue berries in autumn which are enclosed by colourful, eye-catching maroon calyces. The long ovate leaves are soft and downy or hairy and when crushed produce a pleasant peanut odour, and although it is hardy, it does best in a sheltered position. It is native to China, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and India. The variety C. trichotomum var. fargesii has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Very few good seeds collected.
