Colchicum Haynaldii

Colchicum haynaldii is a Balkan autumn-flowering meadow saffron with elegant lilac-pink goblets rising directly from the soil after summer. The petals may be lightly veined or chequered and surround bright yellow anthers, while the broad strap-like leaves appear separately in spring. The species has accumulated several historical names, including C. visianii, reflecting the difficulty botanists once had separating its variable regional forms. It is attractive in short grass, beneath open shrubs or in a sunny alpine bed, provided the soil is fertile, drained and undisturbed.
