Cosmos sulphureus ‘Cosmic Red’ delivers a sustained display of rich, velvety red flowers carried on slender stems above finely cut foliage, creating strong colour and constant movement through the summer months. The tone is deeper and more saturated than most sulphur cosmos, giving the plant a warmer, more dramatic presence in open planting. Derived from Cosmos sulphureus, a species native to Mexico and Central America, this strain retains the toughness and floriferous habit of the wild plant while concentrating the flower colour into darker red shades. Plants branch freely and flower continuously, with blooms opening in succession from midsummer into autumn. As with all seed-raised strains, some variation in depth of colour is to be expected. Growth is fast and upright, with plants remaining open and airy rather than dense. Flowering is strongest in full sun, particularly on well-drained soil, where stems stay firm and flowering remains uninterrupted even in warm, dry conditions.
