Cosmos sulphureus is a fast-growing annual distinguished by its warm-toned flowers and finely divided foliage, producing a long season of colour and movement. The flowers, typically in shades of yellow, are carried freely on slender stems, creating a lighter, more informal effect than the common garden cosmos.
Native to Mexico and Central America, this species thrives in open, sunny habitats and tolerates heat and poor soil with ease. Plants branch readily, forming airy clumps that flower continuously from midsummer into autumn. The foliage is softer and more fern-like than Cosmos bipinnatus, giving the plant a slightly wilder, more spontaneous character.
Flowering is most prolific in full sun, with plants remaining upright and floriferous even in dry conditions. Self-seeding is common where conditions suit, allowing the species to reappear naturally in subsequent seasons.
