Crithmum maritimum is a distinctive coastal perennial grown for its fleshy, aromatic foliage and tolerance of extreme conditions. These seeds allow gardeners to grow true rock samphire, a plant long associated with sea cliffs and maritime gardens, where few others will thrive.
Native to coastal cliffs and rocky shores across much of Europe and the Mediterranean, this species is adapted to salt spray, wind and drought. Plants form low, spreading clumps of thick, divided blue-green leaves with a strong, fresh scent. In summer, flat-topped umbels of yellow-green flowers appear, attracting a range of insects.
Best grown in full sun and very free-draining soil, Crithmum maritimum is ideal for gravel gardens, raised beds and coastal situations. It performs poorly in heavy or waterlogged ground but is exceptionally long lived where drainage is sharp.
