Cypella Coelestis Var. Platensis

Now known botanically as Phalocallis coelestis, this South American bulb produces slender sword-shaped leaves and exquisite iris-like flowers in clear blue, violet or lavender. Each bloom lasts only a day, but fresh buds open repeatedly throughout summer, revealing intricately patterned inner segments and ornate style branches. The cultivar name platensis recalls forms once associated with the Rio de la Plata region. Below ground, the bulbs have unusual burnt-orange scales. Easy and quick from seed in warmth, it is an excellent container subject for a sunny greenhouse or sheltered summer patio.
