Daphne tangutica Retusa Group forms a dense, rounded evergreen shrub with short, dark green leaves and terminal clusters of richly fragrant flowers. Each tubular bloom is nearly white inside but flushed purple or reddish on the exterior, producing an attractive two-tone effect in late spring and early summer. Bright red berries may follow among the compact foliage. Native to western China and Tibet, this slow-growing daphne is well suited to a rock garden, raised bed or sheltered border. It dislikes disturbance but can become a long-lived specimen where the soil stays cool and drains freely.
