Digitalis lutea subsp. australis is a slender southern European foxglove with narrow leaves and refined spikes of small, tubular flowers in soft straw yellow. The bells are less showy than those of larger garden foxgloves, but their graceful spacing and delicate brown markings give the plant an understated woodland character. A short-lived perennial, it returns reliably in cool, humus-rich soil and may seed itself into light shade. The flowers are valuable to bees and combine beautifully with ferns, grasses and dark foliage. As with every foxglove, all parts are toxic.
