Parsnipflower buckwheat is a compact western North American perennial with a low woody crown, softly woolly grey-green leaves and cream-yellow umbels. Broad leafy bracts beneath each head give the blooms a distinctive parsnip-like outline and remain decorative as the seed develops. The plant is naturally found on dry slopes, sagebrush steppe and open mountain ground, where it supports native bees and butterflies. Tough, drought resistant and neatly proportioned, it is an excellent subject for a sunny gravel garden, raised bed or alpine trough with lean soil and perfect drainage.
