Originally collected near to the port of Mogan on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria, we suspect a derivative of E. Cicutarium, this diminutive creeping plant was originally discovered in a dry rocky area below sea cliffs. Masses of dainty purple/pink flowers are spread across sprays of finely divided leaves.
Native across Europe, North Africa and western Asia, E. Cicutarium and its variants thrive in open, disturbed ground and is now naturalised in many parts of the world. Plants form spreading rosettes with reddish stems and flower freely over a long season. The distinctive, beak-shaped seed pods give the plant its common name and aid natural self-seeding.
Best grown in full sun and well-drained soil, Erodium cicutarium tolerates drought and low fertility better than most garden plants. It is particularly useful for dry, open sites and naturalistic planting schemes where a modest, ground-hugging habit is preferred. Should do well in a hot spot!
