Fritillaria Gussichiae

Fritillaria gussichiae is a Balkan woodland bulb with slender stems, narrow leaves and pendent bells in pale green, softly washed with brown. Unlike many fritillaries, the flowers are usually unchequered, giving them a smooth, understated elegance. Native to parts of Bulgaria, the former Yugoslavia and Greece, it grows where spring light reaches the ground before the tree canopy closes. The modest colouring repays close study, particularly when sunlight reveals the translucent tepals and contrasting interior, and it is a refined addition to a cool bulb collection.
