Haplopappus macrocephalus is a Chilean subshrub with a thick woody base and dense rosettes of leathery, spoon-shaped leaves edged by sharp little teeth. Large solitary flower heads rise on softly felted stems and may open in yellow, orange, burnt orange or red, appearing enormous in proportion to the low cushion. Endemic to central and south-central Chile, it grows in eroded ground and rocky crevices exposed to full sun. Compact, drought tolerant and highly individual from seed, it is an exceptional trough or gravel-garden plant and can also provide unusual cutting stems.
