Hymenoxys hoopesii, known as owl’s-claws, is a western North American mountain perennial with long grey-green leaves marked by conspicuous pale midribs. Branching stems carry bright yellow daisy flowers in early summer, their narrow ray florets drooping around a prominent golden disc and creating a lively, slightly tousled outline. Native to open slopes and meadows at elevation, it combines strong cold tolerance with a dislike of humid, waterlogged conditions. It is excellent in a sunny gravel border, where the cheerful flowers attract insects and the foliage remains distinctive.
