Ipomoea tricolor is a vigorous tropical morning glory, usually grown as an annual climber, with slender twining stems and broad heart-shaped leaves. Large funnel flowers open in the morning in shades of sky blue, violet or purple, often with a luminous white throat, before folding as the day advances. Given warmth and strong sun it can rapidly cover a trellis, arch or fence and flower from midsummer until frost. Native to tropical America, it brings intense colour and a lush screen in a single season, but its seeds are harmful if eaten.
