Leptospermum scoparium, better known as manuka or New Zealand tea tree, is a rounded evergreen shrub with small aromatic leaves and a profusion of five-petalled white flowers in late spring and early summer. The name tea tree recalls the use of its leaves by early European visitors, while the plant has much deeper importance in Māori material culture and traditional practice. Bees working the flowers produce the celebrated manuka honey. Tough, wind resistant and drought tolerant once established, it makes an excellent coastal or sheltered sunny specimen.
