Licuala aurantiaca, commonly known as the Golden Licuala or Orange Petiole Fan Palm, is a medium-sized, clustering palm native to coastal swamp forests in Thailand. It is now considered synonymous with Licuala paludosa.
This species is distinguished by its vividly orange to red leaf sheaths and petioles, which contrast strikingly with its large, circular, fan-shaped leaves that are divided into several segments. The combination of its unique coloration and ornamental foliage makes it a highly desirable addition to tropical and subtropical landscapes.
Thriving in partial shade to full shade and moist, well-drained soils, the Golden Licuala prefers a warm, humid environment and requires regular watering to maintain soil moisture. It is well-suited for understory planting in tropical gardens and can also be grown as an indoor ornamental in containers, provided it receives adequate humidity and protection from direct sunlight. Due to its sensitivity to cold, it should be protected from temperatures below 1.7°C (35°F).
