Ligusticum scothicum subsp. hultenii is a North Pacific form of Scots lovage, occurring from the Russian Far East and Japan across the Aleutians to western Canada. Strong aromatic leaves are divided into glossy, fleshy leaflets and form a compact coastal clump. In summer, rounded umbels of small white flowers rise above the foliage and attract numerous insects before developing ribbed seed. Adapted to subarctic shores, sea cliffs and maritime meadows, it combines exceptional cold tolerance with a preference for cool roots, salt-laden air and steady moisture.
