The orange or fire lily is one of Europe's most vivid native bulbs, carrying broad, upward-facing orange flowers above whorled leaves in early summer. Many populations form dark bulbils in the leaf axils, allowing plants to reproduce without seed and to establish colonies on mountain meadows and woodland edges. The intense colour inspired the German name Feuerlilie and helped make the species an early parent of Asiatic garden lilies. Hardy, long lived and relatively straightforward from seed, it thrives in sun and deep, well-drained soil with reliable spring moisture.
