The Tantallon Group represents selected seed-raised forms of the exquisite Shirui lily, Lilium mackliniae. Slender stems carry nodding, shallow bells in ivory, pale pink and bluish lilac, sometimes with a few maroon flecks near the throat. The species was discovered in 1946 by Frank Kingdon-Ward and his wife Jean Macklin, for whom it was named, and is the state flower of Manipur. Confined in nature to misty high meadows on Shirui Kashong, it is a conservation plant as well as a botanical jewel, demanding cool roots and summer humidity.
