Lotus hirsutus, long known as Dorycnium hirsutum, is a softly architectural Mediterranean subshrub with silvery grey-green foliage clothed in fine hairs. Rounded clusters of small white to blush-pink pea flowers open through summer, followed by dark seed pods that contrast with the pale leaves. The dense evergreen mound brings year-round texture to gravel gardens, sunny banks and coastal planting, while the flowers attract bees. Drought tolerant once established, it thrives in heat and lean soil but appreciates shelter from severe frost and persistent winter moisture.
