Macleaya microcarpa is a statuesque plume poppy with towering stems, large deeply lobed grey-green leaves and airy clouds of tiny buff, cream or pinkish flowers. The foliage alone gives a bold, almost tropical effect, while the branching panicles remain elegant from summer into autumn. Native to China, it spreads by vigorous underground rhizomes and can develop into a dramatic screen or background colony. It is best planted where its expansion can be managed. Broken stems release orange latex, so gloves are sensible, and the plant should be kept away from children and pets.
