This truly handsome and valuable showpiece specimen forms a clump of broad green leaves which age to bronze. In early summer, strong thin stems arise in thick bunches bearing dangling seed heads composed of deep reddish-purple flaky seed cases, which remain on the stems until late autumn. This superb long-lived grass is also bone hardy.
