Modiolastrum lateritium is a low, spreading South American mallow with creeping stems that root as they travel, forming generous ground cover or scrambling up a warm wall. Rounded, lobed, softly hairy leaves are joined through summer by solitary peach to apricot cups, each with a yellow centre surrounded by a deep rose-pink ring. The colour combination is distinctive and warm, while the long flowering season suits gravel gardens, sunny banks and containers. Semi-evergreen in mild winters, it needs heat, shelter and excellent drainage to survive colder British gardens.
