The wild daffodil or Lent lily is a much-loved native of western European woods, pastures and river valleys. Nodding spring flowers carry a deep golden trumpet surrounded by paler yellow tepals, rising above narrow grey-green leaves. Once widespread, many colonies have declined through habitat loss, picking and the replacement of old grassland, making responsibly raised plants valuable for naturalistic gardens. Narcissus pseudonarcissus is hardy, long lived and ideal for naturalising beneath deciduous trees or through cool meadow grass where the bulbs can remain undisturbed.
