Nigella Damascena

Nigella damascena is one of the most recognisable and romantic annuals, its clear blue flowers suspended in a haze of fine, feathery foliage, followed by ornate seed pods that are as decorative as the blooms themselves. Few plants combine delicacy, structure and presence so effortlessly, making this species a long-standing favourite in gardens and flower arrangements alike. Native to southern Europe and western Asia, this species grows quickly from seed, forming upright, lightly branching plants. The star-shaped flowers appear in late spring and early summer, succeeded by inflated, striped seed capsules that persist well after flowering and are widely used dried. Colour and form vary naturally in seed-raised plants, creating an informal and lively display. Flowering occurs most freely in full sun on well-drained soil, and the species is well adapted to open ground and light soils. Once established, plants often self-seed, maintaining a continuing presence without becoming intrusive.
