Paeonia Anomala Subsp. Veitchii

Veitch's peony is a hardy Chinese species with a neat clump of divided deep green leaves, paler beneath, and single flowers that may be white, pale pink or rich rose. The saucer-shaped blooms often nod slightly above the foliage in late spring and surround a generous centre of lemon-yellow stamens. Long treated as a subspecies of Paeonia anomala, it is now widely accepted as P. veitchii. Graceful rather than heavy, it suits a woodland edge or mixed border and becomes a long-lived plant when given deep soil, steady moisture and freedom from disturbance.
