Paeonia broteri is the wild peony of the western and southern Iberian Peninsula, forming a substantial clump of divided, glossy leaves and single spring flowers in deep rose, crimson or magenta. A bright ring of golden stamens fills each broad cup, followed by pods that open to display glossy black fertile seeds among vivid red sterile ones. Named for Portuguese botanist Felix de Avelar Brotero, it is a handsome species for a warm woodland edge or sheltered border. Deep soil, summer moisture and minimal disturbance allow it to develop its finest form.
