Paeonia Daurica Subsp. Wittmanniana

Wittmann's peony is a refined western Caucasian form now treated as Paeonia daurica subsp. wittmanniana. Broad, divided leaves often have a soft blue-green cast, while single spring flowers open in cream, pale lemon or ivory around a rich centre of yellow stamens. The gentle colouring gives the plant a luminous woodland quality and contrasts beautifully with darker foliage and spring bulbs. Hardy and long lived, it dislikes transplantation but develops into a generous clump in deep humus-rich soil with light shade and reliable moisture.
